Answers to Common E-Visit Questions

Premier Physician Network doctors answer frequently asked questions about E-Visits.

What is a MyChart E-Visit?

MyChart E-Visit is a service offered to help save patient’s time and energy when they are in need of health care for common, minor health issues.

E-Visit allows patients to virtually “visit” their health care provider through the Premier MyChart online portal instead of physically going into an office.

These visits are a convenient, worthwhile option for current patients who are generally in good health.

Within their personal MyChart online portal, patients can answer questions to decide if their health care needs can be met with an E-Visit or if it would be better to see their doctor in person.

E-Visits might be useful for health issues including:

  • Allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergies)
  • Back pain
  • Cold sores
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea (loose, watery bowel movements)
  • Fatigue
  • Gout
  • Headache
  • Heartburn
  • Poison ivy
  • Red eye
  • Sinus problems
  • Travel advice
  • Urinary problems
  • Vaginal discharge/irritation
  • Other

Each of these E-Visits costs $30, which is billed directly to the patient not to an insurance company. If the E-Visit cannot be completed, there will not be a charge.

Doctors can prescribe medication or other treatment options for your health issue, as they relate to your E-Visit.

Though E-Visits are interactive, they are not in real-time, and there is no video component.

What is the advantage of E-Visits for patients?

Patients can benefit from E-Visits in a variety of reasons.

By opting for an E-Visit for minor health care needs, patients can save time and energy they would use by going to an in-person visit.

E-Visits also focus on patient-centered care. These visits help improve patients’ access by providing a different style of communication with their health care provider.

How should patients determine if an E-Visit is right for their particular situation?

Though E-Visits are great for some health care situations, some needs are more serious and should be cared for at an in-person visit.

To determine if an E-Visit is right for you, you will spend about 10 minutes answering questions about your symptoms once you sign into your personal MyChart online portal.

A staff member will review your symptoms and medical history and will respond to let you know a treatment plan or to schedule an in-office visit.

Health care issues that are generally treatable by E-Visit include:

  • Allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergies)
  • Back pain
  • Cold sores
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea (loose, watery bowel movements)
  • Fatigue
  • Gout
  • Headache
  • Heartburn
  • Poison ivy
  • Red eye
  • Sinus problems
  • Travel advice
  • Urinary problems
  • Vaginal discharge/irritation
  • Other

What health issues should never be considered for an E-Visit?

Though an E-Visit can be a valuable tool to save you time and energy if you’re not feeling well, there are some health care situations that aren’t appropriate for an E-Visit.

Some things that would restrict you from having an E-Visit include:

  • You are breastfeeding
  • You are not at least 18 years old
  • You are pregnant

Also, E-Visit is not available for use with emergency situations. If you have an urgent health need, it’s important to call your physician’s office directly or call 911.

Other concerns doctors cannot take care of during E-Visits, include:

  • Medication refill requests
  • Paperwork for handicap placards
  • Prescriptions for controlled substances
  • School note requests
  • Work note requests

What if the condition cannot be answered through an E-Visit?

Though your health care provider will do his or her best to help treat you by E-Visit, if that is what you prefer, some conditions are better treated in person.

If you are not cleared for an E-Visit after you answer the questionnaire within MyChart, you will not be charged for your visit.

Instead, a staff member will help you set up an in-person visit with your health care provider.

With an E-Visit, how quickly does a patient receive a response about their issue?

Patients start the process of an E-Visit by filling out a questionnaire within their personal MyChart online portal.

Typically, patients will receive a response to their E-Visit request within one business day.

That time is not guaranteed, however, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Weekend requests should be responded to by the following Monday.
